UPCOMING EXHIBITION

LUCENT: women treading lightly

12 March – 5 April

Opening Event 19 March 6pm - 8pm

Artists: Chris Byrnes, Helen Dunkerley, Penny Dunstan, Emma Florence-May, Annemarie Murland, Dan Nelson, Mandy Robinson, Niomi Sands, Belinda Street, Linda Swinfield, Lezlie Tilley, Patricia Wilson-Adams

This exhibition aims to shine a light for those women artists who are not so easily heard above the clamour of “immediacy art”. These are women who work in the regions, who live lives on the periphery and those with very little profile despite having dedicated their lives with passion and integrity to art. We are women, old and young, mothers, partners, professionals and artists, all caught up with the vicissitudes of busy lives but in no way diminutive intellectually or aspirationally.

Celebrate Creativity with the Abstract Abilities Art Competition

This International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPwD), Uniting Local Area Coordination (LAC) is excited to launch the Abstract Abilities Art Competition, a celebration of talent and creativity from artists living with disabilities. IDPwD, observed each year on December 3, highlights the achievements and contributions of individuals with disabilities, while fostering greater understanding and inclusion in our communities.

This year's competition invites artists to showcase their skills in various forms, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and digital art. With a $200 prize for highly voted artworks, this is a fantastic opportunity to promote diversity and recognition of artistic talent within the community.

The competition is open to residents of Hunter New England, Illawarra Shoalhaven, Nepean Blue Mountains, Northern Sydney, Southern NSW, and Western Sydney. Submissions are due by April 3, 2025, and public voting will take place from April 14 to May 9, 2025. Finalists’ work will also be showcased in gallery exhibitions throughout June 2025.

Don't miss the chance to celebrate and support the creative voices of those living with disability. Visit Uniting LAC's website for more details on how to enter and be a part of this inspiring initiative.

Tania Mason | Surrounded by Time with a Canary in a Coal Mine

Surrounded by Time with a Canary in a Coal Mine aims to capture the fragility of our environment and the urgency of conservation. By juxtaposing historical illustrations of endangered species with their current plight, the objective is to create a poignant narrative that evokes both nostalgia and concern.

All works are sitting on shelves as repositories of memory that add depth, suggesting that these once-vibrant beings could become mere relics of the past. The title references the canary’s role as an early warning signal, reinforcing the idea that the loss of biodiversity is a call to action for us all.

This exhibition not only honours the beauty of these creatures but also serves as a rallying cry to protect them. It prompts viewers to reflect on their responsibility in preserving the natural world, transforming admiration into action.
