The story of Baohong Masters’ Watercolour Paper began with a collaboration between a family-run paper mill in Northeast China and renowned Australian watercolour artists Ross Patterson and David Taylor, together with Luke Senior. Their shared goal was ambitious: to develop a world-class watercolour paper capable of meeting the demands of professional artists.
Over approximately three years of testing, refinement and development, the paper was continually improved through hands-on artist feedback. Internationally acclaimed watercolour master Joseph Zbukvic was later consulted to help further refine its performance, including the crucial balance of traditional gelatine sizing.
Crafted for Watercolour
At the heart of Baohong Masters’ paper is 100% cotton fibre, selected for its strength, absorbency and longevity. Traditional papermaking methods are combined with modern manufacturing techniques to achieve a consistent, dependable painting surface.
A carefully controlled process of internal and surface gelatine sizing helps regulate the movement of water and pigment across the paper. Baohong is particularly known for its controlled, slower absorption, giving artists more working time to manipulate colour, create subtle transitions and develop expressive washes.
The result is watercolour paper with excellent wet strength that can withstand multiple washes, layering, lifting and more demanding techniques while maintaining the integrity of the surface.
