Description
Arches Water colour paper is made the traditional way, using a cylinder mould. This method ensures that the fibres are evenly distributed which makes the paper extremely stable, so it will not warp or stretch when water is applied to it.
Arches Water colour paper is made from long, 100% cotton fibres allowing it to absorb a lot of water without warping or causing the colours to bleed.
It is sized to the core with natural gelatine, so it can be scratched without tearing or linting. This internal sizing also prevents paint penetrating into the paper, allowing light or shine through the pigment and reflect off the paper while ensuring durability of the colours.

I’ve tried many brands and types of watercolour paper over my 30 year career as an artist. Arches is the only paper that stands up to the rough treatment I give the paper as I’m making my paintings. I find I’m often washing off large sections off or scrubbing sections or doing more subtle changes to the features. Arches paper takes it all, without getting furry or creating those little burs of paper.
I teach, and occasionally students asked me about paper they have brought with them. I do a small quick test! I wet my finger and do a few gentle rubs! This test will tell me how strong their paper is. Most papers I’ve tested this way, will immediately form little balls of paper where I rub. Arches won’t! My favourite is Arches 300gsm, hot pressed! I love the marks the paper allows watercolour paint to give!
